Three reports that data usage on their network surged by 500 percent on New Year’s Eve, with total data usage on the night measuring in at 80 terabytes, up from 14 terabytes in 2010.

New Year’s Day also saw intense data usage, with 74 terabytes used.

Facebook was one of the most popular destinations for smartphone users, with a 20% jump in traffic between midnight and 1 am.

The number of SMS messages also went up to 46 million this New Year, up from 36 million in 2010. Calls went from 19 million to 21 million.

However, it is the phenomenal growth in data that is attracting all the attention – as more and more people come to understand the benefits and capabilities of smartphones, Three expect adoption of smartphones to reach almost 100% in the coming year.

Thomas Malleschitz, Marketing Director at Three, said: “It is a phenomenal amount of growth and shows just how much smartphones are changing the way our customers communicate. This kind of demand vindicates Three’s focus on building a network designed for the internet. It also shows just how important data bundles are becoming – and of course the value of plans which offer genuinely All-You-Can-Eat handset data allowances.”
